Upper Creek Angler

Guide Services and Custom Rods and Flies

Upper Creek Angler guide services specializes in fly fishing for trout in Western North Carolina, especially in native trout waters and delayed harvest streams and is located in Morganton, North Carolina.  Native trout waters and delayed harvest streams start flowing after a short, twenty-five minute drive.  And some of the best fishing in the South can be found within an hour and half drive in several directions.

About UCA:   We have been fishing and prowling the western North Carolina game lands for over 30 years combined.  And though we make the trip to Eastern Tennessee to fish the tailraces of the Watauga and South Holston on fairly regular occasions now, our favorite places to fish are still the little creeks that run through our area, where trophy fish are twelve inches long.  The regulation delayed harvest waters in our area also provide novice and experienced anglers alike a day of fun with bigger fish in larger numbers.  As a member of Trout Unlimited, we insist on practicing catch and release even when it’s not required by regulation and keep a camera with us at all times to document catches.  Our first native trout were caught on Upper Creek and the South Toe--two streams we consider “home water.”  Our primary goal when we’re with clients is to by and by make ourselves unneeded--to make our clients fishermen who don’t need guides to catch fish like guides do!  Book a day with us today!

We are excited to announce the formation of a wonderful fly fishing tournament to take place on the private water portion of Rock Creek--many thanks to our friends at River’s Edge Outfitter for donating their 2 miles of private water to this event.  This is all Taylor’s project!  We will post the tournament application packet as soon as it is completed, but mark your calendars for April 21.  In conjunction with this tournament, Taylor and I have built two new fly rods to raffle off--a true tool of a small stream rod, a 6’ 5-weight and a Payne 100 split cane bamboo.  Raffle tickets are $10 for each rod or combos for both rods are available for $15.  E-mail Taylor at tsharp94@gmail.com and me at uppercreekangler@gmail.com to let us know that you want a ticket and we’ll put your name on one--and one of us will reply with Taylor’s mailing address so you can put your check made payable to The Hope Chest in the mail.

We are happy to now endorse Taylor Sharp, who recently received his guide license, as a guide and rod builder with Upper Creek Angler.  Taylor’s rod work is truly special.  Each of the rods I’ve seen that Taylor has built has been stunning, remarkably better than their “factory” counterparts--and I’m talking about BIG name brands.  When he’s got some time, I’m going to have him build ME a rod!  He’s certainly a great asset to add to the rod building front.  Additionally, I’ve fished with many of the finest fishermen in the Southeast. I’d rank Taylor, now, as one of the top three fishermen I’ve been lucky enough to fish with.  UCA is lucky to add him--and you’d be lucky to get on his calendar for either getting an expertly built fly rod or a day in the water.

John Zimmerman of Upper Creek Angler and tournament partner Taylor Sharp teamed together under the name of Mo’Town Anglers recently to fish in the Tie on One for CFR Fly Fishing Tournament on the Davidson River in Brevard North Carolina. If I counted correctly, there were fifteen teams.  John and Taylor finished second behind nationally renowned, Fly Fishing Master’s Champions Kevin Howell and Walker Parrott.  Walker and Howell edged the Mo’Town Anglers out by a mere four inches--65 inches to 61.  More important than the finish of the event, though, was the support of a great organization.
